Description:

Brothers-in-Law in Tennessee Sell their Interest in Young Slave

In his will signed on June 1, 1832, Stephen Brooks gave all five of his slaves (including Caswell) to his wife Mary Terrell Brooks during her lifetime. At her death, he wanted the slaves to be sold at public auction "in one lot that they not be separated" and the proceeds divided among their nine children including Thomas Brooks and Mahala L. Odell, wife of Murphy Odell.

With this bill of sale, Thomas Brooks and Murphy Odell sold their interest in the enslaved boy named Caswell to William Jackson.

[SLAVERY.] Thomas Brooks and Murphy Odell, Manuscript Document Signed with Marks, Bill of Sale, November 4, 1839, Madison County, Tennessee. 2 pp., 8" x 12.75". Some toning; ink somewhat light; good.
