British Military 7 Piece Archive Including 4 Documents Signed by Sir George Yonge as British Secretary at War

 

Interesting collection of four manuscript documents (three signed) and three manuscript letters signed, each one page. The archive dates from 1788 to 1792.

 

Includes:

 

A partially printed document signed: "Geo. Yonge" acknowledging receipt of "Six Hundred & Twenty Pounds in full for Three Months Allowance as Secretary at War from Michaelmas day 1788 to Christmas day following".

 

An ALS signed: "Geo: Yonge" dated Sept. 4, 1788 requesting the Paymaster General "issue to Edward Moore Esquire Deputy Paymaster of Widows Pensions the Sum of Three thousand Pounds . . ."

 

An ALS signed: "Geo: Yonge" dated Nov. 10, 1790 asking the Paymaster General "out of the Monies advanced to you on account of Bounty and Subsistence for the Independent Companies to be forthwith raised you do issue to the respective Agents the Sums specified in the list hereunto annexed... ." Manuscript list of six lieutenants, each to be paid one hundred pounds, is present.

 

An ALS signed: "Geo: Yonge" dated May 8, 1790 asking the Paymaster General to "issue to Edward Moore Esquire the Sum of Three thousand, three hundred Pounds on account of Widows Pensions."

 

Other items include a partially printed document signed: "W Brummell" dated Aug. 3, 1792 acknowledging receipt of "Fourteen Pounds five shillings in full for Six Months Net Allowance for Fire and Candle, to the Garrison of Chester." An unsigned document which reads, "General Account for Levy Money Pay &c of Cat. T.J. Hardyman Independent Company raised in pursuance of The Rt. Hble. the Secretary at wars letter of 13th Octo 1790 & finally inspected the 14th Decem following." Total of 548 pounds 17 shillings 6 pence. A document signed: "Andrew Lawrie Agent" dated June 4, 1791 relating to the "General Account of Captain Donald Macdonalds Independent Company" totaling 634 pounds 7 shillings 7 pence.

 

Sir George Yonge (1731-1812) was British Secretary at War from 1782-1794, except for April-December 1783 when Richard Fitzpatrick served in the War Office. Yonge was Member of Parliament from 1754-1796. He served as Lord of the Admiralty (1766-1770), Vice-Treasurer for Ireland (1782), Master of the Mint (1794-1799) and Governor of the Cape of Good Hope (1799-1801). In 1793, Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada John Graves Simcoe named Toronto's Yonge Street, then a military road, in his honor.

We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

Upon winning your item(s), you will receive an invoice with our in-house shipping and handling fees included. ***We will ship to the address as it appears on your invoice, unless you inform us otherwise, immediately upon your receipt of invoice***

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.
