Description:

British Magazine on Bill Permitting Jews to be Naturalized by Parliament

An issue of The Gentleman's Magazine, 48pp, 5” x 8.25”, London, June 1753. Small stain at the bottom of title page; some minor scattered foxing throughout; else, in near fine condition.

A featured article of this issue concerns a significant event in Judaica history: "The Bill, permitting the Jews to be Naturalized by Parliament, having been misrepresented in the London Gazetteer, of Friday the 18th of May; and probably never having been read either by the Author of that Paper, or by several others who have since signed a Petition, which that paper was calculated to support: to remove those false Impressions, the following short but true, State of Facts is submitted to the Consideration of the Public."

This issue also contains a full-page print of "St. Philip's Church in Charles Town, South Carolina" and on the facing page, in part, "The church is esteemed one of the most regular and complete structures of the kind in America. The design was sent us from Charles Town, where it has a very advantageous situation at the upper end of a broad extensive street." It is quite rare to find prints of American architecture in this title.

Another full page headed "View and Description of the Island of Capri" shows a lovely engraving, with text presented vertically, which is an unusual format. A very descriptive piece on a famous island in the Naples harbor in Italy.

Also highlighted is a full-page hand-colored plate picturing a bird, "The Blackcap Flycatcher", perching on a flowering plant, "The Yellow Virginian sweet Jessamine", taken from Catesby's National History, and a full-page chart headed "Each Day's Price of Stocks in June, 1753". A fantastic pre-Revolutionary War magazine with a wide range of varied content.

The Gentleman's Magazine was a monthly magazine founded in London, England, by Edward Cave in January 1731. It ran uninterrupted for almost 200 years, until 1922. It was the first to use the term magazine for a periodical.
