British Gunner Signed 1776 Service Statement, Fought at Louisbourg & Quebec!

A written statement by a British gunner, certifying his service at the Siege of Louisbourg and Quebec. 1p, measuring 8" x 10", Port Royal, dated December 24, 1776. Handwritten and signed by officer "Nicol Bower" and countersigned by "Rob: Wood J:P" as Justice of the Peace. Bower outlines his service as a gunner on the HMS Maidstone and his service at both the Siege of Louisbourg and Quebec. The signed sheet has been mounted at the top edge to a slightly larger sheet. With flattened folds and small tears and paper loss to the right edge. Some text has been lost, but still very legible. Light foxing in places. Boldly signed.

The statement in full:
"These are to certify whome it may concern that Mr. Nicol Bower Gunner of his Majesty's ship Maidstone, was made an officer at the Seidge [sic] of Louisbourg in 1758 by Admiral Boscawen, and was their an officer at its Reduction: and was likewise at Quebec in his Majesty's ship Alborouga [sic] and was on actuall service on shore, in cary: all the cannon from the Lower to the Upper to make a defense against a French Squadron of ships that we had made Intelligence of being the cost of America. Who afterwards took Newfoundland in 1762."

The Siege of Louisbourg and the Battle of Quebec were pivotal operations during the French and Indian War (Also known as the Seven Years' War). The Siege of Louisbourg lasted from June 8 to July 26, 1758 and the British victory there would lead to the subsequent British campaign to capture Quebec in 1759 and the remainder of French North America the following year.

Applicable shipping and handling charges will be added to the invoice. All items will ship with signature required, and full insurance. Most items are sent via Federal Express, with P. O. Box addresses being sent through USPS. We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

Upon winning your item(s), you will receive an invoice with our in-house shipping and handling fees included. ***We will ship to the address as it appears on your invoice. If any changes to the shipping address need to be made, you must inform us immediately.***

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.

Third Party Shipping Option: If a third party shipper is preferred, the buyer is responsible for contacting them directly to make shipping arrangements. For your convenience, we have provided some recommended shippers. For your protection, we will require a signed release from you, confirming your authorization for us to release your lots to your specified third party. At that point, our responsibility and insurance coverage for your item(s) ceases. Items picked up by third party shippers are required to pay Connecticut sales tax. Items requiring third party shipping due to being oversized, fragile or bulky will be denoted in the item description.
