British and American Archive of 11 Signed Letters and Cards, All Framed

A fantastic group of eleven signed letters and cards by British and American authors and poets, all framed. Includes:

1. Algernon C. Swinburne ALS: 1p, measuring 4.5" x 6.5" (sight), Holmwood, England, dated February 14, 1877. Signed "A.C. Swinburne" and addressed to an unknown recipient, acknowledging the receipt of a check. Matted and framed with a November 21, 1874 "Vanity Fair" print of Swinburne titled "Before Sunrise". Overall size of 20" x 19.75".

2. Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. Signed Card: Measuring 4" x 1.5" (sight), Boston, dated February 1, 1881. Signed "Oliver Wendell Holmes". Matted and framed with an image of Holmes to the overall size of 10.5" x 15".

3. William Cullen Bryant ALS: 1p, measuring 4.25" x 6.75" (sight), New York, dated May 25, 1874. Signed "Wm C. Bryant" and addressed to Elliot C. Cowden. Bryant regretfully informs Cowden that he will be unable to accept an invitation due to shoulder pain. Matted and framed with a lithograph of Bryant to the overall size of 19.75" x 16.5".

4. Archibald J. Cronin Signed Page: 1p, measuring 5.75" x 8.75" (sight), No place, undated. Signed and inscribed "kindest regards A.J. Cronin". Framed with a black and white photograph mounted to the page above the signature. Overall size of 9.5" x 12.5".

5. Edwin Markham Signed Poem: 1p, measuring 9.25" x 7.5"(sight), No place, dated Ca. 1922. A printed poem, "Lincoln, the Man of the People", signed by Markham "Your friend Edwin Markham". Framed to the overall size of 14.5" x 12.75".

6. Robert Browning Clipped Signature: Measuring 3.25" x 1.375" (sight), No place, undated. Taken from the conclusion of a larger letter, "yours affectionately ever, Robert Browning". Framed with a photograph of Browning to the overall size of 10.5" x 15".

7. Alexandre Dumas ANS: 1p, measuring 4.75" x 7.5" (sight), No place, dated July 8, [no year]. Signed "A. Dumas" and addressed to Salvador. Written in French, translated to "Give a lodge to Alexandre" - possibly a reference to Dumas' involvement with the freemasons. Framed with an image of Dumas to the overall size of 15.875" x 13.125".

8. James Russell Lowell ALS: 1p, measuring 4.5" x 7" (sight), Cambridge, dated November 29, 1864. Signed "J.R. Lowell" and addressed to C.W. Allen, Esq. Reading in part: "I couldn’t send a bare signature to a state that has sent two hundred thousand men to fight the battles of us all, & whose regiments bear on their tattered flags the names of our most glorious victories…" Framed with a lithograph of Lowell to the overall size of 15" x 12.75".

9. Lillian Hellman ALS: 1p, measuring 5.5" x 7.25" (sight), No place, undated. Signed "Lillian xxxx" and addressed to an illegible recipient, possibly her future partner, Dashiell Hammett. Hellman thanks him for sending her records and writes, "You are the only loving man who ever thought there was anything admirable about me when I was angry. Therefore, it seems mandatory now that you get a divorce and marry me. Please attend to it quickly…" Matted and framed with a photo of Hellman to the overall size of 17.5" x 13".

10. Henry Longfellow ALS: 1p, measuring 4.5" x 6", No place, dated July 8, [no year]. Signed in the third person, "Mr. Longfellow" and addressed to a Mr. Ware, inviting him to dinner the following day. Matted and framed with a lithograph of Longfellow to the overall size of 17.5" x 13.5".

11. Carl Sandburg ALS: 1p, measuring 5" x 7.75" (sight), Northampton, Massachusetts, dated February 9, [no year]. Signed "Carl Sandburg" and addressed to Mr. Peffer, regarding his busy plans in New York the following day. Matted and framed with an image of Sandburg to the overall size of 18" x 14.25".

All of the letters have flattened mail folds. They and the cards have varying degrees of toning, soiling, and foxing. Bold signatures to all. Overall, very fine.

Applicable shipping and handling charges will be added to the invoice. We offer several shipping options, and remain one of the few auction houses who proudly provides professional in-house shipping as an option to our clients. All items will ship with signature required, and full insurance. Most items are sent via Federal Express, with P. O. Box addresses being sent through USPS. We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

Upon winning your item(s), you will receive an invoice with our in-house shipping and handling fees included. ***We will ship to the address as it appears on your invoice, unless you inform us otherwise, immediately upon your receipt of invoice***

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.

Third Party Shipping Option: If a third party shipper is preferred, the buyer is responsible for contacting them directly to make shipping arrangements. For your convenience, we have provided some recommended shippers.
