"Boss" Tweed Orders Street Signs, with Check Signed by Hall & Connolly

A signed order form by the notorious "Boss" Tweed, together with a check signed by two of his henchmen and a related illustrated page from Harper's Weekly. The form measures 8.5" x 6.75", City of New York, dated December 10, 1868. Signed "W M Tweed", the document approves a payment of $226 for the installation of 565 glass street signs by A & G Brandon, Lamps and Gas. Together with a signed check, measuring 8" x 4", New York, dated August 3, 1870. No. 3860, drawn on the Broadway Bank for a payment of $54.00 made out to Mary McGuire. Signed by Tweed's associates A. Oakey Hall and Richard B. Connolly. Both of these have been matted with an original page from Harper's Weekly, dated October 7, 1876, to the overall size of 25.5" x 19.5". The magazine's illustration is captioned "The Capture of Tweed - The Picture That Made the Spanish Officials Take Him for a 'Child-Stealer'." Both the form and check have flattened folds. Light toning to all. Boldly signed, very good overall.

William Marcy Tweed, also known as "Boss Tweed", worked his way up the political ladder in New York City and was elected to the House of Representatives in 1853. In 1858, he became head of Tammany Hall and began gathering New York elites around him who controlled the majority of the city's finances. The "Tweed Ring" unofficially controlled New York City through embezzlement, bribery, and corruption until being taken down in the early 1870s. Tweed was tried and convicted of forgery and larceny in 1873 and given a 12-year sentence. Two of his lackeys, Richard B. Connolly and A. Oakey Hall, were also arrested. Connolly was indicted on 15 counts of misdemeanors and fled the country. Hall was eventually acquitted of all charges against him.
