Pershing John

"Black Jack" Pershing Signed WWI American Battlefield & Memorials Book

A later reprint of American Armies and Battlefields in Europe: A History, Guide, and Reference Book (American Battle Monuments Commission, U.S. Government Printing Office, 1938) signed by military commander John J. Pershing (1860-1948) as "John J. Pershing" on the front flyleaf. Hardcover volume with dark blue morocco boards and gilt embossed spine and front cover decorated with U.S. seal. Expected surface wear to covers, and minor isolated edge darkening, toning, and foxing to pages. Else near fine. Octavo. 6.25" x 9" x 1.25".

The 547pp book is divided into 15 chapters providing a concise military history of the movements of the American Expeditionary Force in France, Belgium, Italy, and Russia during World War I. The preface was authored by our book signee--and American Battle Monuments Commission Chairman--Black Jack himself. The book contains 80+ fully annotated maps (topographical, battle line, etc.), illustrations (panoramic, aerial, etc.), and photographs (some full-page, fold-out, or stored in a leather pouch at the end of the book, etc.) Also including a number of statistical tables, glossary, index, and beautifully illustrated pages of military insignia and medals in color.

Chapters 11 and 12 focusing on American war cemeteries and war memorials are of especial interest to the discerning World War I collector. Period travel itineraries and photographs of sites at Meuse-Argonne, Oise-Aisne, Aisne-Marne, St. Mihiel, Somme, Flanders, Bellicourt, Varennes, Montfaucon, Sommepy and others testify to the exertions of the American Battle Monuments Commission. First established in 1923, the ABMC was tasked with preserving the burial grounds of and constructing monuments to American servicemen who had died abroad.

The book's many action photographs illustrate every facet of the war on land, air, and sea: tank fire, gas attacks, shipwrecks, zeppelin and plane crashes, hospital ships, refugees and prisoners of war.

John J. Pershing commanded the American Expeditionary Force during World War I, being promoted to the rank of General of the Armies in 1919. This was a brilliant capstone to a successful 40-year-long military career served on three continents. His bold military strategies on the Western Front secured his celebrity.
