Bill Clinton ALS Reminiscing on Kindergarten Days, With Archive of Related Material
Archive

A fascinating and unusual archive relating to Bill Clinton's kindergarten class in Hope, Arkansas, including one autograph letter signed as President and another typed letter from Mack McClarty, his childhood friend. Totaling 7 pieces in all, measuring between 8.5" x 11" and 3.5" x 4.75", ca. 1993. The material references "Miss Marie's School for Little Folk", the private kindergarten of Marie A. Purkins (1883-1976) which Clinton attended as a child. Exhibits varying degrees of handling creases and edge wear throughout. Else, very good to near fine. Please see accompanying images for further information on contents.

In 1993, Purkins' great nephew Glen Williams III, discovered "invoices" which Miss Marie pinned to each child once each month so they could wear them home. The parents would then place the money in an envelope and send it back with the payment ($3). Williams sent samples to the President, Mack McLarty and one for the family of Vince Foster (also a kindergarten mate of Clinton's).

The lot includes:

1.) 1p autograph letter signed by the President as "Bill Clinton", 6" x 8.5", on embossed White House letterhead, September 10, [1993]. Addressed to Glen L. Williams III, Clinton writes in full: "Thanks for your letter and the invoices. Mack McLarty and I read it together. You brought back a lot of good memories."

2.) 1p typed letter signed from Thomas "Mack" McLarty, Clinton's first White House Chief of Staff (1993-94). Signed at conclusion "Mack McLarty" on personal letterhead, 7" x 10", September 16, 1993. Similarly addressed to Williams, he writes: "Thank you so much for your letter and the invoices for Miss Mary's [sic] kindergarten, which the President was kind enough to share with me. I thought you might enjoy seeing our exchange of notes, a copy of which I have enclosed. We share many good memories." Together with the mentioned photocopy, showing an original invoice page from Miss Marie's school where Clinton jokingly writes "Mack, This ones yours", with McLarty's response below: "Despite higher tax rates, I'm pd. up on Miss Mary's. I love your note."

3.) Accompanied by a copy of the correspondence from Williams to President Clinton dated August 13, 1993, explaining how he came into possession of the items. Also present are several pieces of ephemera including transmittal envelopes, a brochure and printed reproduction of a photograph taken on October 4, 1951, at a birthday party for a pupil at Miss Marie's, pictured are Clinton and McLarty at age five.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
