Montgomery Bernard Law

Bernard Law Montgomery Signed Souvenir Typescript, "Crossing the Rhine"

2pp souvenir typescript of Bernard Law Montgomery's famous memorandum "Crossing the Rhine", signed by him as "Montgomery of Alamein / F.M." (where "Alamein" refers to Montgomery's role in securing the significant Allied victory at the Second Battle of El Alamein in October 1943, and "F.M." refers to his title of Field Marshall.) Signed at the center of the second page. On textured, semi-transparent paper. A tiny closed tear at the top of the first page mentioned just for accuracy. Else near fine. 8.5" x 11".

Montgomery had issued the original memo to his 21st Army Group in late March 1945. The document outlined in nine bullet points what soldiers could expect during the imminent Allied invasion into the heart of the Third Reich, called Operation Plunder. Of a memorable turn of phrase are "8. Over the Rhine, then, let us go. And good hunting to you all on the other side", as well as the bold and invigorating statement, "5. … The complete and decisive defeat of the Germans is certain; there is no possibility of doubt on this matter."

Bernard Law Montgomery (1887-1976) was a career soldier who saw action during World War I, the Anglo-Irish War, the Arab revolt in Palestine, and most significantly during World War II, where he commanded British forces in both the European and African theaters.
