Benjamin Harrison was the 23rd President of the United States, serving from 1889 to 1893. Born on August 20, 1833, in North Bend, Ohio, he was the grandson of William Henry Harrison, the 9th U.S. president. A lawyer and Civil War brigadier general, Harrison later became a U.S. senator from Indiana. As president, he supported high tariffs, expanded the Navy, and signed the Sherman Antitrust Act into law. His administration also saw the admission of six new states to the Union. He lost his bid for re-election to Grover Cleveland in 1892.
