There is a minor closed tear located in the lower left corner, and the left side is a little grubby, else very good to near fine. Benjamin Harrison (1833-1901) was the grandson of 9th U.S. President William Henry Harrison (1773-1841). The Ohio-born Benjamin relocated to Indiana during his young adulthood, and indeed, this midwestern state featured prominently in his future military and political career. Harrison served as a Colonel of the 70th Indiana Volunteers during the Civil War, seeing action in Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign, and eventually reaching the rank of brevet brigadier general of volunteers in the Union Army. After the war, Harrison became increasingly interested in state politics. In 1879, the same year he signed this check, Harrison was presidentially appointed to serve on the Mississippi River Commission, which regulated the waterway over its course from North Dakota to Louisiana. Two years later, the future 23rd U.S. President had secured a seat in the U.S. Senate. Harrison served one term in between 22nd and 24th U.S. President Grover S. Cleveland (1837-1908)’s two terms.
