Description:

Harrison, (Signer) Benjamin

Benjamin Harrison, Declaration Signer & Continental Congress Delegate, Autograph on Document

Single page manuscript document signed, 8" x 13.25", as a Land grant. Dated "June 1, 1782". Signed by Benjamin Harrison "Benj Harrison" as Governor of Virginia along the lower right corner. Lovely vibrant ink on age toned paper.

In 1764, when the House defied the Royal Governor and passed the Stamp Act Resolutions, the then current Governor tried to bribe Harrison with an appointment to the executive council. He refused the appointment and instead declared a devotion to republican principles. He was elected to the Continental Congress in 1774, and on June 28, 1776, Jefferson's draft including initial alterations of the Declaration of Independence was reported to Congress by the Committee of Five charged with the initial drafting. The Congress resolved on July 1 that the Declaration be considered by Harrison's Committee of the Whole. Having further amended the Declaration on July 2 and 3, the Committee adopted the Declaration in final form on Thursday, July 4; Harrison duly reported this to the Congress, and delivered to Congress a final reading of the Declaration. The Declaration was then unanimously agreed upon and Congress resolved to have the Declaration engrossed and signed by those present, which signing took place on August 2, 1776.Smith,p.39.

In 1777 he returned to Virginia to a seat in the House of Burgesses and also to serve as a lieutenant in his county militia. He was chosen Speaker of the House in 1778, and elected Governor of the State of Virginia in 1782
