Benjamin Harrison
Washington, D.C., ca. February 1893
Benjamin Harrison Collection
Archive
A small collection relating to President Benjamin Harrison, consisting of a signed cover, a cabinet card, and a related letter and cover from Harrison's secretary. The items are dated ca. February 1893, shortly after the death of Harrison's first wife, Caroline. The covers have varying degrees of expected wear, toning, and soiling. Chipping to the cover edges. Additional toning and soiling to the cabinet card, but still very attractive. Boldly signed by Harrison within the address to his son. Overall very good.

Two covers and the accompanying letter from Harrison's secretary are all on mourning stationery. One cover is addressed in Harrison's hand to his son, Russell. The cabinet card bust portrait of Harrison is not dated, but it is likely from the early 1890s. There is also a later dated cover addressed to Charles T. Walter of the St. Johnsbury Republican, possibly unrelated.

The collection includes:
1. Hand-addressed Cover Signed. Washington, D.C., postmarked February 5, 1893. On Executive Mansion mourning stationery. Addressed to his son Russell, "R. B. Harrison Esq./Arlington Hotel."
2. Cabinet Card Portrait. Measuring 4.25" x 6.5", Washington, D.C., n.d. A bust portrait of Harrison in a dark three-piece suit. C.M. Bell photography backstamp.
3. Letter and Cover from Harrison's Secretary. Washington, D.C., dated February 11, 1893. On mourning stationery and addressed to Hon. R. B. F. Pierce, expressing thanks for sending a kind message of sympathies.
4. Cover. Augusta, Georgia, dated December 30, 1908. Addressed to Charles T. Walter of the St. Johnsbury Republican.

In 1891, it was discovered that Caroline Harrison had contracted tuberculosis. Her condition was diagnosed as terminal in early 1892, and both her husband and his opponent limited their campaign activity in the 1892 presidential election out of respect for her condition. She died on October 25, 1892, two weeks before her husband was defeated for reelection.
