Description:

Benjamin Harrison 1893 LS Days After Leaving Office Re: White House Cards & Hunting Trip

LS, 2pp on bifolium, measuring 5" x 8", dated March 8, 1893, Indianapolis, IN. A lengthy correspondence on black-bordered paper from then-former president Benjamin Harrison to one Edward S. Clarke Esq. of Philadelphia, sent just four days after the end of his term. Within, he mentions an autographed White House card previously enclosed with the letter and discusses a hunting trip he plans to take. Boldly signed "Benj Harrison" at the conclusion and accompanied by original transmittal envelope. Exhibits expected surface toning, soiling, and darkened marks in areas with flattened letter folds at middle, not affecting visibility of text. Good condition overall with interesting content.

In full:
"Your letter of Feby 27th did not come to my attention at Washington, as I was too busy to deal with my personal correspondence in the last few days there. I take pleasure now in sending, for the photograph album of the Bengies Club, a picture taken of me in California- the only one I have just now, but I think it is fairly good. I enclose also upon one of the White House cards an autograph for the lady to whom you refer. I am expecting to take a hunting trip to the Illinois river with my Boys the first of next week though I am yet almost too tired to feel like an excursion.

I shall always carry in my grateful recollection your kindness and the kindness of the other members of the Bengies Club and hope to have the pleasure of meeting you all again, either in Philadelphia or at the club house."
