BENJAMIN FRANKLIN (1706-1790) Document Signed, "B. Franklin," as President of the Supreme Council of Pennsylvania 1 page 14.5 x 13.75 Philadelphia March 14 1788 approving a land grant. Offered together with an additional manuscript Document Signed Adam Poe et al 1 page 11.75 x 14.75 Washington County Pennsylvania July 21 1796 conveying the granted land unto another party. Expected folds some cockling to parchment some loss to paper seal at top left very light dampstains else very good. Franklin approves a land grant for Adam Poe for a tract of land to be named Poeville in Washington County. In 1796 Poe and his wife Elizabeth conveyed the 377-acre tract to Henry Smith of the same county for £152-5. Adam Poe (1747-1840) was a member of the Washington County Pennsylvania militia during the Revolutionary War. Serving as a captain of his company he together with his brother Andrew Poe killed the sons of Wyandott Chief Half-King while rescuing captives on September 18 1781. After the war Poe became a boat captain on the Ohio River. Around 1820 he moved his family to Wayne County Ohio. Adam may have been a distant relative of author Edgar Allen Poe (1809-1849) but conflicting genealogical records are not definitive on the subject. Worthy of further research.
