Description:

Franklin Benjamin 1706 - 1790

1787 Benjamin Franklin signed document granting land in Pennsylvania.

1pp hand-written document on vellum, cleanly signed by Revolutionary War intellectual Benjamin Franklin (1706-1791) as "B. Franklin" recto, verso containing the docket, seal, and recording statement. Dated "the second day of July in the Year 1787" and countersigned by "James Trimble" as witness. The State of Pennsylvania embossed seal affixed verso is beautifully intact. One red wax seal with ribbon located in upper left corner. Expected folds, with toning. Grubbiness verso. Else near fine, with the document still supple, measuring 15.75" x 13.25".

A lovely example of an early land deed signed by Benjamin Franklin, with an ornate flourish.

The land deed begins: " ... granting of the warrant herein after mentioned and of the sum of Ten Pounds five Shillings lawful money paid ... is granted a ... certain tract of land called Charity Situate on Otter Creek including Adams Hunting Camp ... four hundred and four acres and one eighth ... with the appurtenances ... to have and to hold the said tract or parcel of Land ... " and continues to define land borders, and rights of ownership.

A fully hand-written document from Franklin's highly active post-bellum period, when he was a scientist, politician, inventor, civic activist, statesman, and diplomat.
