Benjamin Franklin Butler (1818-1893) was a major general in the Union Army and a colorful and often controversial figure. After the Civil War, he served for fifteen years in executive positions of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, including as its president from 1866 to 1879. The National Asylum for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers was established on March 3, 1865, to provide care for volunteer soldiers who had been disabled through loss of limb, wounds, disease, or injury during service in the Union Army.
