BENJAMIN DISRAELI (1804-1881) Black-bordered Autograph Letter Signed, "D," 5 pages 4.5 x 7 front and verso on conjoined sheets with an additional page., "George St Han,"[ov], "er Square July 6," [18]73. To, "His Grace The Duke of Wellington K,"[night of the], ".G,"[arter], ".," Fine condition. Black-bordered because Benjamin Disraeli's wife Mary Anne Disraeli the Viscountess Beaconsfield (Lady Beaconsfield) had died on December 15 1872.

In part, "My dear Duke of Wellington It is very kind of Her Grace & yourself to remember me & there are few by whom I would sooner be remembered but tho' obliged to attend to public affairs I am otherwise living in seclusion & my accepting your kind invitation might be misinterpreted by those whose courtesies I have declined. You will therefore permit me with grateful feeling to deprive myself of the pleasure of being your guest. I have not receivd the new volume of the great work … & believe me I value the honor of the books being presented to me by yourself. Ever with sincere regards D.," Disraeli may be referring to Essays Written for the Wellington Prize and Selected for Publication by His Grace's Desire from those specially mentioned by the Arbiter printed in Edinburgh and London in 1872.
