Benjamin Cardozo Incredible ALS "I am Alone in the World Now"

3p, [5.5” x 9”] ALS by Supreme Court Justice Benjamin Cardozo, State of New York Court of Appeals, Benjamin N. Cardozo, Chief Judge, Albany, Dec. 4, 1929, and addressed to Judge Clearwater. Signed as a Chief Judge in the New York Court of Appeals, Cardozo writes Clearwater stating he is “Grateful to (Clearwater) for your kind words with reference to the work of my court and my own opinions in particular”. Cardozo later mentions the death of his sister to which he states “I am alone in the world now”. Truly amazing content from this future Supreme Court Justice.

Large, bold signature, measuring over 4" long, signed in black fountain pen, with expected folds from mailing, and reads:

“Dear Judge Clearwater:

I have your letter of Nov. 29, and have firm instructions to the clerk to furnish 7m with the desired information.

I am grateful to you for your kind words with reference to the work of my court and my own opinions in particular.

Things have no been going well with me of late. About two weeks ago I lost a dearly beloved sister with whom I lived. I am alone in the world now. In such circumstances I prize more than ever the fond will of my friends among who I am proud to include you.

Alphonso T. Clearwater was admitted to the bar in 1871. He served as the district attorney of Ulster County, NY, and as judge on the New York supreme court and court of appeals.

Benjamin Cardozo was nominated to the Supreme Court by 31st U.S. President and Republican Herbert Hoover in 1932. Before being nominated, Cardozo served as the Chief Judge of the New York Court of Appeals. Cardozo, along with left-leaning justices Harlan Fiske Stone and Louis Brandeis, formed the “Three Musketeers” and voted in favor of many New Deal policies. From 1932 to 1937, they faced off against the “Four Horsemen”, as conservative justices George Sutherland, Willis Van Devanter, James Clark McReynolds, and Pierce Butler were called. Cardozo is remembered for his significant influence on the development of American common law in the 20th century, in addition to his philosophy and vivid prose style.
