Benjamin Butler Signed War-Dated Letter Re: Papers of Henry A. Wise

A letter written in another hand, signed by Butler "Truly yours, Benj F Butler" at the conclusion. 2pp of a bifolium, measuring 5" x 8", Fort Monroe, dated March 23, 1864. With flattened mail folds and light edge soiling. Mounting residue at the edges on verso. Boldly signed, overall very fine.

Written on Headquarters of the Department of Virginia and North Carolina letterhead, addressed to Benjamin P. Poore Esq., regarding sending some papers. Reading in full: "You shall have the Wise papers, - sending me a list and package of what you wish to keep or think important, and returning all when through with them." On a second page is an additional note, reading "The within mentioned papers have been forwarded to you this day per Adam & Co. Express. Respectfully Henry H. Bennett."

The papers referred to belonged to Confederate general and former VA governor Henry A. Wise (1806-1876). After seizing Norfolk in early 1862, federal troops raided Wise’s farm, ransacking his library. Most of his letters and correspondence were collected and ended up in Boston. Following the war, Benjamin Poore acquired much Wise's documents, which were later auctioned off in 1888.

Benjamin Franklin Butler (1818-1893) is remembered for his controversial command of New Orleans during the Civil War, and he was dismissed from the Army after his failure at the First Battle of Fort Fisher in December 1864. He attempted to run for president in 1884, but lost the nomination to Grover Cleveland. Benjamin Perley Poore (1820-1887) was a Washington correspondent and historian from Massachusetts. During the war he briefly served as a major in the 8th Massachusetts volunteers. He was known for rubbing shoulders with the D.C. elite, politicians, dignitaries, and celebrities and would often host dinners to bring his eclectic guests together.
