Description:

Begin: "Unfortunately, the government continues its erroneous ways....call to hand the decision over to the public, by means of new elections or a referendum"

Typed Letter Signed "M. Begin" in Hebrew as Member of the Knesset, 1p, 6.25" x 8". The Knesset [Jerusalem, Israel], August 25, 1975. To David Avni. In Hebrew with full English translation. Two file holes in blank right margin. Fine condition.

In full, "Thank you for your additional letter of August 21, 1975. The demonstrations are an expression, as I have told the country on television, of a deep concern amongst the public in light of the government's policies. Unfortunately, the government continues its erroneous ways and therefore it is correct to have a continuous call to hand the decision over to the public, by means of new elections or a referendum. You have probably noticed that we are continuing this call, both in writing and verbally. Happy New Year to you and your household."

On August 18, 1975, one week before Begin wrote this letter, United Press International reported that "Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin went before a special session of parliament [Knesset] today and defended the proposed interim peace agreement with Egypt against angry charges from the right-wing Likud Party [Begin's party] that the United States was forcing it down Israel's throat … [U.S. Secretary of State Henry] Kissinger, after talks with President Ford in Vail, Colo., said he was optimistic about the resumption of his Middle East shuttle mission…"Opposition leader Menachem Begin opened the special Knesset session with an appeal to the Rabin government to resign. 'This is an example not of an agreement in stages, but a surrender in stages,' Begin said. 'The interim agreement is endangering the security of Israel and therefore it is bad in its roots and its foundations and we oppose it,' he said … Today's session was forced by the Likud which gathered the required 30 signatures to force a special session. However, a formal debate was postponed until later."

Gen. Rabin had replaced Golda Meir as Prime Minister in June 1974. On May 17, 1977, the Likud Party won the national elections and on June 21, 1977, the first time in Israeli history a party other than Mapai was in a position to form a government. Begin became Prime Minister, serving from 1977-1983. A peace treaty between Israel and Egypt was agreed to in September 1978 and was signed on March 26, 1979.
