Begin: "The majority of the leaders of the Alignment refuse to establish a government of national unity. However... there is an increasing demand for the special unification"

Typed Letter Signed "M. Begin" as Member of the Knesset, in Hebrew, 1 page, 8.25" x 10.5". [Jerusalem, Israel], The Knesset, December 6, 1974. To David Avni, Jerusalem. In Hebrew with full English translation. Light creasing, two file holes in blank right margin with backing on verso. Very Good condition.

In full, "Herewith I confirm receipt of your letter of 10 Kislev 5735 - November 24, 1974, fir which I thank you. I have read your serious and important words with much interest. We agree with you: at the moment, there is a need for a government of national unity, and therefore we continue to demand its establishment, for the sake of our people's firm standing against pressure and testing times. The faith in the future of our people, as expressed in your letter, is an important factor in this standing. This is indeed the way to overcome all the problems. Surely, you have noticed that, for now, the majority of the leaders of the Alignment refuse to establish a government of national unity. However, among the public, regardless of their opinions, there is an increasing demand for the special unification. May this yearning bring forth the long-awaited fruit."

Gen. Yitzhak Rabin had replaced Golda Meir as Prime Minister in June 1974. There were two major political groupings in Israel, the coalition dominated by the Labor Party (the Labor Mapai Alignment), and the Likud coalition dominated by Menachem Begin's Herut Party. On May 17, 1977, the Likud Party won the national elections and on June 21, 1977, the first time in Israeli history a party other than the Alignment/Mapai was in a position to form a government. Begin became Prime Minister, serving from 1977-1983.Menachem Begin served in the first ten Israeli Knessets, the ninth and tenth as Prime Minister. When he wrote this letter, he was a member of Knesset 8, in the Likud parliamentary group.
