Description:

Bean, Conrad & Gordon Signed Apollo 12 Limited Ed. "Kissing the Earth" Print

A limited edition print after an original acrylic painting by Alan Bean (1932-2018), Apollo 12 and Skylab 3 astronaut and amateur artist, entitled "Kissing the Earth," ca. 1994. Signed by all three Apollo 12 mission crew members, from left to right along the bottom: Commander Charles "Pete" Conrad, Jr. (1930-1999), as "Charles Conrad Jr."; Lunar Module Pilot Alan Bean, as "Alan Bean"; and Command Module Pilot Richard F. Gordon, Jr. (1929-2017), as "Richard Gordon." The print is artist signed in stone and numbered 18/650 at lower right corner. Printed in vivid colors and matted and framed, not examined out of the frame. Labeled "Novaspace Galleries" verso. The sight size of the print is 25" x 19.375" while the overall frame size is 27" x 32.75" x 1.5." Accompanied by a sales receipt from Novaspace Galleries (Tucson, Arizona) dated April 5, 2003.

"Kissing the Earth" depicts Earth as it appeared dramatically foreshortened from orbit. Bean later recalled the exact moment on his artist's website, www.alanbeangallery.com, and his sentiments are paraphrased on the print itself. Bean stated: "As I looked out my small triangular shaped forward window, I could see the sharply curved horizon… the Earth, some 239,000 miles away now, appeared to rapidly rise. Australia was just coming into view. It was breathtaking..."

The Apollo 12 mission, conducted from November 14 to November 24, 1969, saw the second successful moon-landing; Charles Conrad and Alan Bean became the third and fourth ever moon-walkers respectively. The Apollo 12 team delivered a suite of instruments, called the Apollo Lunar Surface Experiments Package, or ALSEP, which transmitted data from the lunar surface to Earth. The astronauts also explored various lunar craters, and filmed for the first time using a color television camera.

Alan Bean went to space twice; the first time as Lunar Module Pilot during the Apollo 12 mission, and the second time as Commander of the July 23 - September 25, 1973 Skylab 3 mission.
