Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) was the first non-European recipient of the Nobel Prize for Literature, in 1913. Primarily known for his poetry, plays, essays, short stories, novels, travel accounts, and autobiographies, Tagore was also an accomplished religious reformer, teacher, political activist, musician, artist, and extensive world traveler. Four months after signing this envelope, during the summer and fall of 1927, Tagore traveled through Singapore, Thailand, Java, Bali, and Malaysia. His account of this trip became "Jatri", published in 1929.

Tagore sent this letter from Santiniketan, where, twenty-six years earlier, he had established an ashram, or monastery, called Patha Bhavana. In this experimental school, Tagore advocated a wholistic and progressive way of teaching that incorporated nature, sports, music, and the arts into its academic curriculum.
