Banknote Engravers Danforth, Wright & Co. Receipt to RR Company
Partially printed DS
A receipt from Danforth, Wright & Co. made out to the Troy and Greenfield Railroad for engraved plates used for bonds. 1p on company letterhead, measuring 8" x 10", New York, August 10, 1855. The engravers have charged the Railroad a sum of $589.41 for: "Engraving copper plate $1000 Bond… Printing 900 Impressions Bonds & Coupons… 1549 sheets Bond paper". Features an engraved portrait of Benjamin Franklin at top center, with a list of the predecessor companies that joined forces to form Danforth, Wright, & Co. Exhibits uneven toning, moderate surface creasing, and folding near corners. Good to fair overall.

Danforth, Wright & Co. were a firm of prominent banknote engravers which operated under various names and partners over the mid-19th century. By the fall of 1859, partners of the prior Danforth, Wright & Co. who had not joined American Bank Note Company, together with certain staff members who had left after the merger, announced a new company which they modeled after the former called the National Bank Note Company. The new heads of the NBNC saw this as a way to combat the monopolization of the engraving and printing industry, with the firm contracting a deal with the U.S. Government to produce its postage stamps.

The Troy and Greenfield Railroad, chartered in 1848, ran from Greenfield, Massachusetts, United States, to the Vermont state line. It was leased to the Troy and Boston Railroad in 1856, then consolidated into the Fitchburg Railroad 1887 which in turn was acquired by Boston and Maine Railroad by lease in 1900.
