Description:

Joseph Lister writes to a fellow bacteriologist concerning the post-natal infection, "puerperal septicemia"

Autograph Letter Signed, "Joseph Lister," 2 pages, 4" x 6" on mourning stationery, [London], October 11, 1895 to bacteriologist Dr. [William] Bulloch, concerning a report from his correspondent. With the original transmittal envelope addressed in his hand. Light soling, expected folds, else near fine condition.

Lister writes in full: "I am much obliged to you for your report of the puerperal septicemia. What a tremendously virulent affair the poison must have been to produce sloughing of the entire mucous membrane of uterus & vagina. It does seem a great pity that the serum was not used a day earlier. "

His correspondent, Dr. William Bulloch (1868-1941), a bacteriologist, pathologist and medical historian, became chairman of the governors of the Lister Institute in 1832. The year of this letter, Bulloch had just been appointed a bacteriologist at the Institute. Bulloch was a great admirer of Lister and carefully retained his correspondence with the scientist. Many of those letters were presented to the Lister Institute after his death.
