By 1966, Ayn Rand stood as a formidable public intellectual and the chief advocate of her philosophy, Objectivism, which exalted reason, individualism, and capitalism. Nearly a decade after the publication of her monumental novel Atlas Shrugged, Rand had turned from fiction to philosophy, using her monthly journal The Objectivist to refine and disseminate her ideas. That same year, she released Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal, a collection of essays defending laissez-faire capitalism as the only moral social system, grounded in rational self-interest. Surrounded by a growing following of students and admirers, Rand wielded considerable influence in American intellectual circles, though tensions were mounting within her inner circle, particularly with Nathaniel Branden, her longtime protégé and associate. In 1966, Ayn Rand stood at the peak of her philosophical authority, shaping mid-century debates about ethics, politics, and the moral foundations of freedom.
