Excellent full signature of Gen. Chamberlain!

Original postmarked pictorial hotel envelope, 5.75" x 4.5", addressed by Chamberlain to "Mrs Joshua L. Chamberlain / 226 Maine st. / Brunswick, / Maine / Etats Unis d'Amerique." Rough upper edge where opened. Fine condition.

A fine signature of the Civil War General within the addressee, can either be clipped from the envelope or matted over.

"Hotel Grand Continental, Cairo" printed in upper left above a drawing of two Egyptians seated on camels, three different types of trees, and a pyramid in the background. A one piaster Egyptian definitive stamp, first issued in 1886, picturing the Great Sphinx of Giza and the Pyramid of Khufu in the background, is affixed in the upper right. Caire 2 II 91 (Cairo February 2, 1891) postmarks. Back stamped "Brunswick ME Feb 19 1901 Received" postmark.

A color photocopy of Gen. Chamberlain's February 1, 1901, six page letter to his wife, Fanny, is present.

The Jan. 12, 1901, issue of the "New-York Tribune" reported that "General Joshua L. Chamberlain ... who went to Cairo, Egypt two months ago on account of ill health, is reported to be dangerously sick."
