Description:

In 1941 during World War II, the MVP year in which he hit in 56 straight games, future Sgt. Joe DiMaggio signs an autograph in St. Petersburg, Florida, for future Sgt. Charles L. Sivertsen

Jefferson penny postcard, 5.5" x 3.25", signed "Best Wishes / Joe DiMaggio" on blank message side. Self-addressed to C.L. Sivertsen in Glenbrook, Conn., postmarked St. Petersburg, Florida, February 11, 1942.

In St. Petersburg, Florida, for Spring Training with the Yankees, Joe DiMaggio sought a raise from his 1941 salary of $37,500. Voted the 1941 American League Most Valuable Player, DiMaggio had hit safely in a record 56 consecutive games from May 15 to July 16, 1941, batting .357 for the season. He did not sign his 1942 contract until March 13, 1942, a month after he signed this autograph, for $42,000, making him the highest paid player in baseball. On February 17, 1943, DiMaggio enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force, rising to the rank of Sergeant. Missing the 1943 and 1944 seasons, he returned to the Yankees in 1945.
