A superb dealers' lot of 17 pieces, featuring autograph cards, letters, and cartes de visites of major nineteenth- and twentieth-century poets, novelists, journalists, and historians like Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (2 signatures); William Makepeace Thackeray; Horace Greeley; Oliver Wendell Holmes; Carl Sandburg; Edward Everett Hale; Grace Greenwood aka Sara Jane Lippincott; and Benson J. Lossing (2 signatures).

The lot consists of:

- Two autographs of American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882), the first a calling card signed as "With Mr Longfellow's / compliments", and the second a paper slip signed as "Yours truly / Henry W. Longfellow / Jan 25. 1871". Accompanied by two vintage cartes de visites including one Sarony & Co. with "E. Lovejoy / Chicago" stamp verso, and one Charles D. Fredericks & Co. Slight toning and scattered foxing, else very good to near fine.

 - A pale blue paper slip signed by British novelist William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-1863) as "Wm Thackeray." A vertical fold affects the "e" of "Thackeray". Laid down on a slightly larger cream paper slip. Measures 3.5" x 1.75" overall.

- 1p autograph letter signed by American journalist Horace Greeley (1811-1872), signed by him as "Horace Greeley" at lower right. The November 7, 1871 letter was written on cream bifold paper with "New York Tribune" letterhead. Expected folds and minor mounting traces on the last page. In the letter to a Philadelphia matron, Greeley regretfully declines an invitation. Accompanied by a carte de visite, minor stains.

- 1p autograph letter signed by American physician-poet Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. (1809-1894), signed by him as "OW Holmes" at lower right. Written in Beverly Farms, Massachusetts on September 29, 1883. In part: "I deliver an Address on the 17th of October, at the opening of the new Medical College building after which I shall be more entirely at leisure." On cream laid bifold paper. Accompanied by a Silsbee, Case & Co. carte de visite.

- A card signed by American poet Carl Sandburg (1878-1967) as "Carl Sandburg", along with a carte de visite and 2.125" square black and white snapshot of the writer working.

- 1p autograph letter signed by American writer and minister Edward Everett Hale (1822-1909), signed by him as "Edw. E. Hale" at bottom. Dated March 21, 1870. With expected folds, a vertical fold affecting the "w" of "Edw." Else near fine.

- A poem inscribed in the hand of Grace Greenwood aka Sara Jane Lippincott (1823-1904), and signed by her as "Grace Greenwood" at center. The 5-line ABAAB rhyming poem demonstrates Greenwood's mischievous sense of humor: "I hope you are not 'making game' / When for my autograph you pray; - / 'Tis fortunate I have a name / To which no spouse can lay claim / Left purposely to give away. / Voila! / Grace Greenwood". Light water stains and expected paper folds, else near fine.

- Three pieces relating to American historian Benson John Lossing (1813-1891), the first a quote attributed to Erskine, "'If thou hast a truth to utter, speak, and leave the result to God'", along with his signature and inscription as "Benson J Lossing / Poughkeepsie, N.Y. / Feb. 2, 1863." Accompanied by a carte de visite mounted on a larger cream sheet. The third is a carte de visite photo mounted on a larger sheet signed and inscribed: "Benson J Lossing / Poughkeepsie, N.Y. , Nov. 24, 1861". A water stain at lower right, else near fine. 7.5" x 9.5".
