President Harrison commissions as Colonel Edward G. Bush who was wounded at Gettysburg - countersigned by Acting War Secretary General Lewis Grant who was wounded at Fredericksburg and received the Medal of Honor

Partly Printed Document Signed "Benj Harrison" as President and "L.A. Grant" as Acting Secretary of War, 1p, 15" x 17.5". Washington, D.C., May 3, 1892. On parchment. Military vignettes. Completed in manuscript. 2"-diameter blind embossed blue War Office seal affixed at lower left. Folds. Fine condition.

In part, "Know Ye, That reposing special trust and confidence in the patriotism, valor, fidelity, and abilities of Edward G. Bush I have nominated and by and with the advice and consent of the Senate do appoint him Colonel of Infantry in the service of the United States..."

Lewis Addison Grant (1828 -1918) was awarded the Medal of Honor for "Personal gallantry and intrepidity displayed in the management of his brigade and in leading it in the assault in which he was wounded" at Salem Church, Virginia, May 3, 1864. He had also been wounded at Fredericksburg in December 1862. Grant was commissioned brevet Major General of Volunteers, to date from October 19, 1864, "for gallant and meritorious services in the campaign before Richmond, Virginia, and in the Shenandoah Valley."

Edward G. Bush (1832-1892) was in command of the 10th Infantry in the Civil War and was engaged in the Battle of Chancellorsville and in the Battle of Gettysburg, where he was wounded. Major Bush was on frontier duty in Texas from 1869-1876. He was only 54 when he died on July 4, 1892, just two months after President Harrison signed this commission.
