Assassinated Presidential Ephemera, Garfield & McKinley, 2 Pcs
Ephemera
A handsome pair of presidential ephemera dating from the inaugurations of 20th U.S. President James A. Garfield (1831-1881) and 25th U.S. President William McKinley (1843-1901), assassinated in 1881 and 1901 respectively, including an 1881 Inauguration Reception Committee lapel ribbon and a 1901 Inaugural Ball Supper menu. [Washington, D.C.] Individual condition issues will be cited below but is overall very good to near fine. The ribbon measures 2.5" x 7.5."

The lot includes:

1. A violet satin lapel ribbon gilt-stamped with patriotic motifs encircled in a laurel wreath at top, and gilt-stamped "Inauguration / 1881 / Reception Committee" from top to bottom. The top and bottom edges are slightly frayed. Isolated minor fading to the right edge recto and bottom edge verso. Else vibrantly colored and very attractive. 2.5" x 7.5." President James A. Garfield was inaugurated on March 4, 1881.

2. A 4pp "Inaugural Ball Supper / March 4th, 1901" menu comprised of two sturdy stock covers secured by a tricolored ribbon. The deckled inner pages list the supper menu as well as members of the Committee on Banquet and the Executive Committee. Expected wear including scuffs, toning, and scattered minor foxing. The front cover showing two jugate portraits of McKinley and his running mate Theodore Roosevelt is slightly mat-burned at center. Else good to very good. 5.125" x 6.375."

President William McKinley was inaugurated on March 4, 1901. The evening's hot and cold dinner and dessert options at the Inaugural Supper were provided by Maison Rauscher, a high-end restaurant and caterer known as the "Delmonico's of Washington." Highlights prepared by Alsatian-born chef Charles Rauscher included hot French dishes like "Huîtres Sautées au vin Blanc" ["Oysters Sauteed in White Wine"] and "Homard Farcis" ["Stuffed Lobster"], and for dessert Charlotte Bellevue, a strawberry- or cherry-flavored pink-colored cream and wine jelly presented in a decorative mold.
