In full, “I have noted that your service in the House has been marked at all times not only by careful attention to the concerns of your constituents but also by a record of dedication to your country. In my mind, your remarks on the floor of the House on June 6 truly epitomize your deep understanding of the American system. I want you to know that I sincerely appreciate your setting forth these great principles so clearly and succinctly.”



On April 6, 1973, White House Counsel John Dean began cooperating with the Watergate prosecutors. On April 30, 1973, President Nixon announced the dismissal of Dean and the resignations of his Chief of Staff Bob Haldeman and Assistant to the President for Domestic Affairs John Erlichman, describing them as two of his “closest advisers.” Public hearings of the Senate Watergate Committee opened on May 17, 1973. On June 6, 1973, one of the topics discussed in the House was “The Special Constitutional Power and Duty of Impeachment by the House of Representatives.” Undoubtedly, President Nixon telling Congressman Young that “in my mind, your remarks on the floor of the House on June 6 truly epitomize your deep understanding of the American system” referred to the issue of impeachment.


Republican Charles William (Bill) Young has represented Florida in the House of Representatives since 1971. He was a delegate to the Republican National Conventions which nominated Nixon in 1968 and 1972, Ford in 1976, and Reagan in 1984.
