Webster Daniel

Artwork Depicting Daniel Webster’s Home at Marshfield, Mass.

Original pastel on canvas board, 26” x 18”. Titled in white at the lower edge, “Daniel Websters House and farm.” White pin-like spotting across center portion. Good condition.

View of Webster’s estate looking eastward towards the Atlantic Ocean with two clipper ships visible on the horizon. In the foreground is a farmer and six sheep. Webster, known as “The Farmer of Marshfield,” bought the land in 1832 from Captain Charles Henry Thomas and farmed the land for the last 20 years of his life. He built a small building on the lot to function as an office where he could read his agricultural books. Webster spent most of his time tending his fields and livestock. He built seven other houses for his staff of more than 30 housekeepers, carpenters, farmers, gardeners, laborers, etc. and over a dozen others including outhouses, a dairyman’s cottage, and several large barns. Webster’s office is at the far right of the artwork.

Webster’s house was near the Green Harbor River which gave Webster an outlet to the ocean. He used fish, kelp, and seaweed as fertilizer for his crops which included corn, wheat, hay, potatoes, turnips, oats, and beets.

On verso is a penciled notation: “Daniel Webster’s house and farm at Marshfield, Mass. He had terrible hay-fever and was told by a doctor to get a place by the sea. Later it appeared in some statistics that Marshfield had one of the highest hay-fever rates in the country. J M O’Brien July 2, 1958”
