Description:

Toscanini Arturo

Arturu Toscanini, NBC Symphony Orchestra Conductor, ALS to Italian Expatriate Natalia Danesi Murray

2pp ALS inscribed overall in Italian and signed by Italian conductor Arturu Toscanini (1867-1957) as "A Toscanini" at center verso. Written in large and stylized script in green fountain pen on custom pale green stationery paper with "A.T." letterhead. Comes with matching envelope bearing 12 1 cent green George Washington stamps and postmarked in New York, New York on May 3, 1941. In very good to near fine condition. Expected paper folds and wrinkles, and two isolated holes at top and bottom of page. The envelope is letter-opened at top.

In this undated letter, Toscanini reported that he had tried to find his friend Natalia Danesi Murray at both her home and at National Broadcasting Company studios in Manhattan. He wrote: "How long has it been since I have seen you? It seems like a century!"

Toscanini had resigned from his custom tailored position as conductor of the NBC Symphony Orchestra just two months earlier due to professional differences with management. He returned to the rostrum between 1944-1954, conducting radio and television broadcasts of performances by great European composers such as Tchaikovsky and Puccini.

Natalia Danesi Murray (1901-1994) was an Italian expatriate. After a brief stint acting on Broadway, she worked on an NBC radio program broadcasting news bulletins into Fascist Italy between 1938-1944. Murray likely knew Toscanini because of their Italian connection, and because both had worked at NBC studios. Murray later became a journalist, publisher, and the long-time partner of Parisian correspondent Janet Flanner.
