Arnoldus Vinnius's 1663 Legal Treatise

Volume IV of Arnoldus Vinnius's legal treatise Jurisprudentiae Contractae Sive Partitionum Juris Civilis [trans: Jurisprudence Abridged, or the Partitions of Civil Law], published in Rotterdam, Netherlands by Johannes Naeranus in 1663. Arnoldus, who was an extremely well-known legal scholar, had originally published this book from the Hague, circa 1624-1631.

The handsome Latin-language volume is encased between two stiff leather covers, with fine gilt-embossed decoration and rag paper. The volume runs 846pp (including a 17pp index at the end), and features 57 chapters or subheadings. The text is complete with copious margin glosses and footnotes. Expected surface wear to covers including cracked or lightly chipped edges, corners, and spine, but overall very good to near fine. Overall toning to pages. Octavo. 6.75" x 8" x 1.75".

The half title page features a glorious engraved print depicting an ancient lawmaker. At his right, he holds a staff sometimes referred to as the Rod of Asclepius. At left, a tame eagle holds open the pages of his volume.

Arnoldus Vinnius (1588-1657) was a graduate of the University of Leiden. He taught legal studies for over 40 years and was known for his modern approach to scholarship. Vinnius interpreted and commentated treatises from ancient and modern lawmakers. His extremely popular books were widely translated in multiple editions, covering such topics as civil law, inheritance law, and maritime law.

Johannes Naeranus (1608-1679), in addition to book publishing, was also a vocal advocate of religious toleration in seventeenth-century Europe.
