Description:

Arnold Lobel "Frog & Toad" Original Ink Drawing, From Artist's Estate

An original drawing by esteemed children's book author and illustrator Arnold Lobel (1933-1987), depicting his two beloved characters Frog and Toad sledding down a snowy hill. Boldly delineated in black ink on cream paper stock, with faint pencil sketching lines visible underneath the ink, as well as pencil-drawn margins found along the sides. Stamped "© Arnold Lobel Estate" in the lower left corner verso. The lower right corner is slightly blunted, with all other edges crisp and trimmed. Lobel's original ink drawing was to provide the basis for an illustration to be included in a 1981 coloring book produced by Lobel. The image size is 7.875" x 10.125" while the paper stock measures 8.125" x 10.75." Provenance: Sourced directly from Lobel's family after the artist's death in 1987.

Arnold Lobel created four children's books in the "Frog and Toad" series between 1970-1979: "Frog and Toad are Friends" (1970); "Frog and Toad Together" (1972); "Frog and Toad All Year" (1976); and "Days with Frog and Toad" (1979). Each book explores the friendship between two contrasting but kindred amphibians: Frog, care-free and exuberant; and the graver, more cautious Toad. Titles from the "Frog and Toad" series books were awarded a Newbury Honor, a Caldecott Honor, and the Christopher Award.

Arnold Lobel oversaw the publication of a "Frog and Toad" coloring book entitled "The Frog and Toad Coloring Book: Favorite Pages from the Four Famous Books" (New York: Harper & Row, 1981). The basis of our ink drawing first appeared in "Frog and Toad All Year" (1976), in the story entitled "Down the Hill," on page 9. Lobel enlarged this illustration and modified its caption for the coloring book; it became page six with the caption, "The sled began to move down the hill." See attached images for reference purposes only.

In addition to the "Frog and Toad" series, Lobel is also acclaimed for his 1977 children's book, "Mouse Soup."
