Arkansas Planter John Humphries sold four of his teenaged slaves to Natchez slave traders Peter Boisseau and William Yandle with this conveyance, drafted by Judge George C. McWhorter in Concordia Parish, Louisiana.

Excerpt

"Be it remembered that on this twentieth day of April A. D. Eighteen hundred and Forty-Four Before me George C. McWhorter Parish Judge and Ex-officio Notary Public in and for the Parish of Concordia, duly commissioned and qualified and in the presence of the witnesses hereinafter named and undersigned, Personally came and appeared John Humphries a resident of White County State of Arcansas who declared and said that for the consideration of the sum of Nineteen hundred and fifty dollars cash in hand paid the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, he has this day granted bargained sold and conveyed, and doth by these presents grant bargain, sell and convey all his right title, interest claim and demand whatsoever in and to the following named Negroes slaves for life—Alex, a negro boy of black complexion aged about seventeen years, Miles a boy of black complexion aged about Sixteen Amanda a girl of dark complexion aged about fourteen years, Weley a boy of dark complexion aged about thirteen years, unto Peter Bossau and William Yanandla both residents of Adams County State of Mississippi."

George C. McWhorter (1805-1856) was born in South Carolina and educated as a physician. After graduating in 1829, he began the practice of medicine in Woodville, Mississippi, in 1830. Dissatisfied with medicine, he studied the law and moved to Concordia Parish, Louisiana, where he was admitted to the bar. McWhorter served as a Louisiana state senator for Concordia Parish, Louisiana state treasurer (1849-1852), and state representative for East Baton Rouge Parish (1853-1855). At the time of his death, he was one of the editors of the Baton Rouge Gazette. He died and was buried in Natchez, Mississippi.

John Humphries (1790-1850) was born in South Carolina. In 1813, he married Piety P. Rains (b. 1798), and they had twelve children, including John Humphries (1821-aft. 1870), who could have been the seller of these slaves. Both lived in White County, Arkansas, in 1850, when the father died in June of dropsy. The son owned three slaves in 1850.

We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

Upon winning your item(s), you will receive an invoice with our in-house shipping and handling fees included. ***We will ship to the address as it appears on your invoice. If any changes to the shipping address need to be made, you must inform us immediately.***

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.

Third-Party Shipping Option: If a third-party shipper is preferred, the buyer is responsible for contacting them directly to make shipping arrangements. For your convenience, we have provided some recommended shippers. For your protection, we will require a signed release from you, confirming your authorization for us to release your lots to your specified third-party. At that point, our responsibility and insurance coverage for your item(s) ceases. Items picked up by third-party shippers are required to pay Connecticut sales tax. Items requiring third-party shipping due to being oversized, fragile or bulky will be denoted in the item description.
