An archive of letters and documents concerning the long career of John Richardson of Poplar Vale an officer and veteran of the Napoleonic Wars who served in the British Army from 1808 to 1840 with the 40th and 83rd Regiments including assignments in Australia and India

(EAST INDIA COMPANY) Archive of letters and documents concerning the long career of John Richardson of Poplar Vale.

Of interest is a commission issued by George Ramsay, 9th Earl of Dalhousie, partly-printed Document Signed, "Dalhousie C in C" as Commander in Chief of India, 1 page, 15.25" x 9.25", Fort William, Bengal, March 13, 1830, appointing Richardson "to hold the Rank of Captain in the King's Army in the East Indies only..."

The archive also includes five manuscript letters, being period copies of correspondence related to Richardson including a lengthy memorial of Richardson's services which began in the Peninsular War in 1808 where he served with the 40th Regiment of Foot. Richard continued with the 40th for a number of years seeing action in numerous battles including the Blocade of Pamplona, Toulouse, and Waterloo being, according to his memorial of December 17, 1834 "once slightly and once Severely Wounded." In 1814 he sailed to Louisiana in company of the forces that would be defeated by Andrew Jackson at New Orleans and then in Australia in 1823 and then "to the East Indies in 1828 from whence he returned to Europe in 1831 in consequence of an impaired constitution after a period of Twenty Tree Years active service in nearly every part of the Globe..."
