Wills Clift (1745-1810) was born in Massachusetts but later settled in Fairfield County, Connecticut. Clift served as a second lieutenant in the 3rd Connecticut Regiment (1775), became a captain in the 20th Continental Regiment in January 1776, then joined the new 3rd Connecticut Regiment as a captain in January 1777, gaining promotion to major in May 1778. He transferred to the 1st Connecticut Regiment, where he served from January 1781 until he resigned in January 1783. He seems to have married Mary Shepard in ca. 1771, but she died in 1772, and their infant son died the following year. He later married Hannah Benedict (1758-1787). After her death, he married the widow Mary Hazard Henderson (1754-1847) in 1792.
