Description:

Castro Fidel 1927 - 2016 Archive of 19 official 1950s photographs of Fidel Castro and the Cuban Revolution

Collection of nineteen black and white glossy photographs of various sizes relating to Fidel Castro and the Cuban Revolution, almost all either pencil and pen inscribed, labeled with typewritten captions, or stamped with Republic of Cuba Presidential Palace, Public Relations, or Press seals. Most in very good condition with expected wear including isolated wrinkles, tape marks, and pencil impressions on photo surface. Five largest photographs measure 8" x 10.125", four medium sized photographs measure 6" x 8", one panoramic photo measures 10" x 4", and nine smallest photographs measure approximately 5" x 4".

Six photographs feature portraits and candid shots of Fidel Castro (1926-2016), the most memorable ones showing him holding a cigar, grasping an ammunition belt, and emerging from a tank. Argentine Marxist revolutionary Che Guevara (1928-1967), Cuban guerilla Camilo Cienfuegos (1932-1959), Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser (1918-1970), and more international leaders are also featured. Remaining photos show public demonstrations, military parades, children's school programs, and Cuban natural landmarks.

Fidel Castro became interested in Communist ideology as a law student at the University of Havana. He participated in armed political uprisings in Columbia and the Dominican Republic before returning to Cuba with brother Raul Castro, Che Guevara, and other members of the 26th of July Movement to overthrow the current government. Castro's guerillas harassed President Fulgencio Batista's military forces until the latter was ousted and Castro became Prime Minister of Cuba in 1959. Thereafter, Castro implemented a socialist state, centralizing the government and social services. Castro fostered the ideological success and practical spread of Communism by supporting anti-Western revolutionary movements in South America and by inviting the Soviet Union to station nuclear weapons in Cuba in the early 1960s, this last event culminating in the Cuban Missile Crisis. Castro cultivated his persona as a forest guerilla even during his tenure as Prime Minister and later President. In all our photographs, he is shown wearing simple uniforms and caps.
