Archive of 15 Third Republic French Presidents Adolphe Thiers, Sadi Carnot, Paul Deschanel, and Gaston Doumergue ALS, ANS, DS, Calling Cards, and Photographs

Two 4pp bifold documents signed by Adolphe Thiers (1797-1877), later the 1st President of the Third Republic. Both documents are on “Minister of the Interior” letterhead and both were issued from Paris. The first document dated September 9, 1834 and signed “Minister of the Interior A. Thiers” center right is addressed to “Counselor of the Prefecture of Bourbon Vendee M. Bonnin”. Thiers, acting as Interior Minister, was writing to inform Bonnin that “the King named you under-Prefect of the arrond. of Fontenay, replacing Mr. Loyson, called to functions that you will replace in the Depart. Lower Pyrenees … you will want to report without delay to your new post … ” The second document dated January 26, 1835 indicates that Bonnin was still at his old post as his replacement had not yet arrived. It is similarly signed “Minister of the Interior A. Thiers”. Both are in fine to very fine condition with expected paper folds, the second with first page browning, measuring approximately 8” x 12”.

A 4pp bifold ALS on “Presidency of the Republic” letterhead is initialed by 5th President of the Third Republic Marie Francois Sadi Carnot (1837-1894) as “S.C” at center of second page. The letter, dispatched from Paris on October 16, 1890 explains to “my dear friend” that “it is to me absolutely impossible to increase the annual contingent of ministers at this moment”. In very fine condition, with light paper folds, each page measuring 4” x 6.25”.

Materials related to 10th President of the Third Republic Paul Deschanel (1855-1922) include an ALS, an ANS, six annotated calling cards, a print, a photographic carte de visite, and a modern biographical booklet featuring two full signatures and four sets of initials. The August 19, 1885 4pp bifold ALS from Calvados is signed “Paul Deschanel” and conveys condolences to a friend. The undated ANS on “Chamber of Deputies” letterhead is also signed “Paul Deschanel”. Of the six “Paul Deschanel” calling cards, all are inscribed with personalized messages, four are initialed “P.d.”, and three are surrounded by mourning bands. Also included are two images of Paul Deschanel, the first a Chalot (Paris) carte de visite, and the second a book plate print. Last, a 32pp c. 1956 100th anniversary booklet with a forward by Roger-Louis Pillet provides a retrospective of Paul Deschanel’s life. In mostly fine to very fine condition, with expected toning and corner folds.

A 4pp bifold ALS on “President of the Republic” letterhead is signed by 13th President of the Third Republic Gaston Doumergue (1863-1937) on the bottom of the fourth page. This charming letter, likely addressed to the caretaker of the president’s summer home, relates mostly to home improvements there. Doumergue comments on the expense of the project, but hopes that it will be completed before Bastille Day. In very fine condition with expected light paper folds, 5.375” x 8.25”.

This archive provides illuminating insights into the political and personal lives of four French Presidents during the Third Republic. Of particular interest to the collector are documents relating to Sadi Carnot, who was assassinated by an Italian anarchist in 1894, and Paul Deschanel, who was institutionalized after his seven-month-long presidency.
