Archive of 11 Typed Letters Signed of Leonard Wood, With Content
Archive
A good archive of 11 typed letters signed by Leonard Wood, written from various places and spanning the years 1913-1920. Each is directed to Mr. and/or Mrs. John Hays Hammond, American mining and oil magnate and philanthropist and his wife. Many regret Wood's ability to attend meetings, while three contain good content about war preparedness or presidential campaigns. Overall very good condition, with many mounted. We welcome bidders to view this archive in our Connecticut offices, and to read our policies regarding lots of over five items.

Three letters deserve special note:

1. Typed letter signed, one page, 5" x 8", January 8, 1915, on "Hd Quarters Eastern Department letterhead to Hammond, in part: "…I don't believe there has ever been a time in the history of the country when it was more desirable for intelligent people to turn their attention to national preparedness, for we are, from a military standpoint, almost wholly unprepared, both as regards trained men and materiel [sic] - living in a fool's paradise - lulled to sleep by the words of fools who neither recognize the teachings of the past or appreciate the possibilities of the future…". Mounted.

2. Typed letter signed, one page, 8.5" x 11", Cincinnati, April 24, 1920. Marked "Personal" at top and reading, in part: "…Your advice to your Hoover friends is splendid. How do you think the campaign in California will work out? There is, of course, much local opposition to Johnson; but I imagine he has the machine pretty well in hand…".

3. Typed letter signed, one page. 8.5" x 11", Chicago, August 12, 1920. Marked "Personal" at top and reading, in part: "…As we look back at it we realize the underground and dishonest method by which the nomination was stolen. However, that is all over, and all we can do now is our best for the country and try to put the party over this fall. Between us, it is going to be a very hard job. Many who were strong for the party are now inclined to turn to Roosevelt and Cox…".

Leonard Wood (1860 - 1927) was a former Rough Rider; Chief of Staff of the United States Army, Military Governor of Cuba, and Governor General of the Philippines.
