Kennedy John 1917 - 1963 An official program, invitation, and admission credentials for the commissioning ceremony of the U.S.S. John F. Kennedy, given to Helen Lempart, one of John Kennedy's longtime secretaries

A collection of ten pieces, ranging in size from 4.25" x 3.25" to 6" x 9", including an official engraved invitation, admission passes, and parking permits, as well as the official programs for the commissioning ceremony for the U.S.S. John F. Kennedy at Newport News, Virginia on September 7, 1968. A few very minor soiled spots, else very fine condition overall.



The September 1968 ceremonies for the aircraft carrier featured remarks by Caroline Kennedy and Robert S. McNamara. The carrier was decommissioned in 2007 and a new Gerald Ford Class carrier (CVN-79) is currently under construction by Northrup Grumman at Newport News and is slated for commissioning in 2020.


Helen Lempart, a Massachusetts native, began working for working for John F. Kennedy in his Washington Senate office in 1955. After working in Boston for Kennedy's 1958 campaign for reelection to the Senate, she returned to Washington to work with Ted Sorenson, Kennedy's chief speech writer. During the 1960 election campaign, she worked in the field in Wisconsin and West Virginia as well as the Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles. During the general election and during Kennedy's administration she worked for Kenneth O'Donnell.
