1p, measuring 9.5" x 7.5", Whitehall, dated December 10, 1667. A clipped bottom half of a Privy Council letter, signed by Gilbert Sheldon, "Gilt Cant." as Archbishop of Canterbury. With additional signatures by Lords Lindsey, Bridgwater, Anglesey, Berkshire, Craven, Arlington, and Carlisle, as well as the Duke of Lauderdale, and Sir W. Morice and Sir W. Coventry.

Accompanied by an additional document, 1p of vellum, measuring 8" x 6.5", no place, dated December 10, 1667. Written in either Latin or Italian, untranslated. Signed "Gilbert Cant." as well, although we note that the two signatures do look different. Both documents have been mounted at the left edge to an archival folder, measuring 10.75" x 15" overall; it could easily be removed if desired. The clipped document has flattened folds and foxing throughout. Uneven edges. The vellum page is toned, with folds and creasing. Light soiling. Both are boldly signed.

Gilbert Sheldon (1598-1677) was born in Stanton, Staffordshire, and graduated from Trinity College at Oxford. He served as the Archbishop of Canterbury from 1663 until his death, and during his tenure, he oversaw the welfare of the University of Oxford as well as numerous secular tasks. He frequently headed investigations into the navy on behalf of the king and would act as arbiter on petitions brought before him. Sheldon can be seen mentioned in Samuel Pepys' Diary, within his "Cozen Roger" story.
