George Washington
n.p., ca. 1830
"Apotheosis of George Washington," After the Painting by Samuel Moore, Richly Colored and Dramatic!
Lithograph

Magnificent, oversized hand-colored lithograph measuring 18" x 25.4", published circa 1830. Lithograph by Heinrich Weishaupt after a painting by Samuel Moore. Printed in Munich by Johann M. von Hermann. Washington is depicted being carried to the heavens by allegorical figures, including Faith and Love. A ray of light shines on Columbia, and the "Orphaned States" mourn at his tomb. A lengthy caption printed in three columns below the image describes the scene. In part: "When the FIRST in Council, the FIRST in the Field, and the FIRST in the hearts of his fellow Citizens, the FATHER of his Country, the ILLUSTRIOUS WASHINGTON; left this earthly mansion attended by those VIRTUES which were the inmates of his Soul in his terrestrial Pilgrimage, and borne on the arms of FAITH and LOVE, he winged his flight to the footstool of boundless Mercy to join the Hallelujahs of the Just and ever Blessed IMMORTALS..." A few small tears and minor areas of chipping reinforced on the back. Period color remains vibrant.

A previous auction record for a sale in 2021 lists a copy without coloring selling for $3,000 at Early American. One with color is listed in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum.
