Apollo XV Astronauts

Apollo XV Color Film Negatives

A second-generation length of 70-mm color film negatives originally taken during NASA's Apollo XV mission. The transparent plastic film has three frames, each showing the Scientific Instrument Module (SIM) Bay of the Command Module viewed from the Lunar Module, with an incredibly eerie silhouette of the lunar surface in the background. The frames are labeled "008811971," "008811972," and "008811973" respectively and correspond to photos from Magazine 88, Magazine Letter TT. The images were taken with one of the crew's Hasselblad cameras. In near fine condition. The strip measures 7.25" x 2.75" overall.

The fourth manned type of its kind to land on the moon, the Apollo XV mission was conducted between July 26-August 7, 1971. Commander David R. Scott (born 1932) oversaw a 3-man crew comprised of Command Module Pilot Alfred M. Worden (born 1932) and Lunar Module Pilot James B. Irwin (1930-1991).

In the two years since Apollo XI astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin first stepped onto the moon, the potential of space exploration had increased manifold. Apollo XV was the first of NASA's extended missions, eventually clocking in at 12 days, 7 hours, 11 minutes, and 53 seconds. This longer period enabled astronauts to more comprehensively study, document, and explore the moon. They collected geological samples, conducted scientific experiments, ventured further out using a Lunar Roving Vehicle, and performed the first deep space walk.

The Apollo XV crew also extensively photographed and filmed their surroundings, vehicles, equipment, and each other using a variety of tools. Astronauts used Hasselblad, Nikon, and Maurer still cameras and a Westinghouse television camera. They took over 2,500 pictures using 16-, 35-, and 70-mm black and white, color, and ultraviolet film. Photographs were taken automatically by the new SIM installed in the Service Module, or by the astronauts themselves, whose semi-automatic battery-operated cameras were attached to their suits. Photos ranged from extreme close-ups to wide-angle panoramic shots. All and any photos were of value, as much remained undiscovered about Earth's closest neighbor.

A remarkable piece of space memorabilia from the Apollo XV mission!
