Apollo 17 Flown Photography Map, Ex. Gene Cernan
Map
A map segment, numbered "A19" at top right, which was flown aboard the Apollo 17 Command Module "America". 1p, 13" x 7.75" (largest), n.p., [December 7-19, 1972]. This particular section comes from "Lunar Orbit Chart A", with the main legend (not included) having identified the chart as "Lunar Orbit Chart A, Apollo 17 REVS 1-18, December 6, 1972, SKB 32100123-377, S/N 1001, 1st Edition October 18, 1972". The map is marked with symbols that include the orbital path, photography legends, and various lunar surface features, showing part of an area of the lunar surface that the crew would cross over during orbital revolutions 1 through 18. Exhibits isolated soiling at middle along the bottom edge, with minor tape marks on the verso. Uneven margins throughout. Otherwise, near fine.

Provenance: From the collection of Mission Commander Gene Cernan. Together with a Certificate of Authenticity from The Space Collective Ltd.

Apollo 17 was the eleventh and final mission of NASA's Apollo program in which Commander Gene Cernan and Lunar Module Pilot Harrison Schmitt walked on the Moon. The mission's heavy emphasis on science meant the inclusion of a number of new experiments, including a biological experiment containing five mice that were carried in the command module. The map itself depicts a printed 1:2,750,000 scale and boldly printed Hasselblad camera tilt instructions. Also present in the top-right corner is Lucretius crater, a relatively fresh impact, with the well-defined rim and interior remaining nearly unscathed from impact erosion.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
