Apollo 11

Apollo 11 Postal Cover Featuring Magazine "S" Space-Flown Film Segment, Ex-Richard Underwood. With The Right Stuff Space COA!
Relic

A segment of Space-flown Magazine "S" film affixed to the center of an Apollo 11 postal cover postmarked July 20, 1969 from Cape Canaveral, Florida. The segment comes from a larger film frame showing Aldrin saluting the U.S. flag, the entire film frame which has been portrayed in the "Apollo 11 / Man on the Moon" black and white cachet of the envelope. The cover is neatly inscribed "Magazine 'S' Flown Film" to the right of the film segment, and bears a cancelled Apollo 8 6-cent U.S. stamp in the postage section. The film segment has been authenticated by Sandy Clarkson of The Right Stuff Space, who has provided a lengthy pen inscription on the envelope verso, as well as an additional signed Certificate of Authenticity stating that this film is from the Richard Underwood estate. The cover exhibits expected light wear including even toning and isolated scuffs, else near fine. The film segment measures approximately .375" square, while the cover measures 6.5" x 3.625" overall.

The film segment came from Magazine "S," the only magazine used by Armstrong and Aldrin while on the lunar surface. It was housed in a silver Hasselblad camera, one of four aboard the Apollo mission, and two actually taken to the lunar surface. This film segment came from one of 125 photos which Aldrin and Armstrong took during their July 19, 1969 EVA and moonwalk.

This Space-flown film segment is from the Richard Underwood Estate. Underwood was the "Supervisory Aerospace Technologist" who developed the Apollo film as soon as it was returned to Earth. In fact, he was the first person to view every photograph from Gemini through the early Shuttle missions. This image was in Underwood's personal collection when he passed away in 2011.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
