Antonio López de Santa Anna Signed Military Appointment as President
DS

A official document signed by Antonio López de Santa Anna in which he appoints Ignacio de la Mora as Colonel Major, Mexico, May 17, 1834. 1p on Ministry of National Defense letterhead, measuring 7.5" x 12". Boldy signed "A. L. Sta. Anna" as President and countersigned by José Joaquín de Herrera. Exhibits light age toning and areas of minor ink smudging to body of text. Isolated damp staining along the document's lower edge, slightly affecting Herrera's signature. Otherwise, very good with Santa Anna's signature measuring nearly 4.5" long!

Antonio López de Santa Anna (1794-1876), known as Santa Anna, was a Mexican politician and general. His influence on post-independence Mexican politics and government in the first half of the nineteenth century is such that historians of Mexico often refer to it as the "Age of Santa Anna". He rose through the ranks of general and president at various times over a turbulent 40-year career, and served as President of Mexico on seven non-consecutive occasions over a period of 22 years. He is probably best remembered for his total victory over the Texans at the Alamo.

José Joaquín de Herrera (1792-1854) was a Mexican statesman who thrice served as the country's president, in addition to serving as a general during the Mexican-American War of 1846-1848.
